Even if Overwatch is at its most controversial, you will rarely hear anyone speak a word against the characters, environments, and world. Overwatch was considered visually stunning ever because that first cinematic back in the museum, and since then we've seen heaps of visual material made in the world, with varying styles and purpose. Sometimes, we see a slice of a hero's life through a comedian, sometimes we get a short, stylish video exploring the roots of a character, and sometimes we get art from inside the universe itself, such as the Hollywood film posters or Castillo's graffiti.
The Art of Overwatch hastens the visual history of Overwatch, bringing all of the above together alongside concept art, previous designs, and other content that has never been released previously.
It's important to be aware that for every visual environment, character, or situation we see play out via a general launch, there's an abundance of material that has been tested and conceived. Clients can find a glimpse at tens of thousands of Overwatches that could have already been, or concepts that couldn't make it into the last game. You have to see exactly how much work goes into any individual environment or character.
When Overwatch was first being worked on, it had some hugely different asethetics. The sport rose from the ashes of Job Titan, a very ambitious Blizzard job that grew too cluttered and bulky, weighed down with its scope. The Artwork of Overwatch shows a leaner, more efficient process of creation and art that's cranked out a great deal of iconic characters along with also a utopian world. The style of this art is so beautiful, that I'd love to see it in overwatch boost service!
The book also has artist and developer commentary which explains why different notions were selected over their alternatives, and exactly what the team was aiming for with the introduction of each character and environment.
